Day 11 Intrepid: Travel to Ohrid

It’s a 3-hour drive from Skopje to Ohrid. We climb twice (via Cerovo 947 m and pass near Mavrovo NP which has the highest peak in the country: Mt Korab 2764 m); and finally descend to Lake Ohrid. Again, one can see a new freeway being built (with World Bank funds I believe; this one is going to Bulgaria I think).

Ohrid is Europe’s oldest and deepest lake; it is almost 300 m deep in places. It is 34 kms long and straddles the border with Albania.

We are staying very close by the lake and the expanse of water is very picturesque as our minibus pulls in.

After checking in, Sando promptly orders a water taxi and we jet off to a lakeside restaurant for lunch, although our disembarkation is inelegant to say the least and we enter the restaurant via the neighbour’s back yard.

There is an orientation walk which we leave part-way through so as to dart across town to a laundry where we negotiate a wash-only option and we take our clothes back to dry on our balcony.

It is early evening by now so we walk along the lakeside promenade which is lovely.

Stopping at a bar for cocktails, we watch the ferries criss-crossing the lake and watch the sun go down.

We can see the (yet another) fortress overlooking the town lit up with lights - very fairytale.

Lovely.

Walked 8.8 kms.
